Before booking

Three castles, one on top of the other.

At the bottom is Hadrian's tomb, with the spiral ramp rising in the dark up to the Sala delle Urne. Above it, the fortress: bastions, prisons, the Cortile dell'Angelo. At the top are the papal apartments, with the Sala Paolina commissioned by Paul III Farnese, and the terrace.

Since 1870 the castle has belonged to the Italian State and since 1925 it has been a national museum: it is not part of the Vatican, even though the Passetto di Borgo connects it to the Vatican Palaces.

The guide

Castel Sant'Angelo, explained

Hadrian had it built as a family tomb, on the bank of the Tiber, and connected it to the city with a new bridge. Almost nineteen centuries later it is still there: a stone cylinder with an angel on top.

From tomb to fortress

The mausoleum was completed in AD 139. Later it was incorporated into the city walls and became a castle. The name comes from a legend from 590: Pope Gregory the Great saw Archangel Michael on the mole sheathing his sword, and the plague ended. Under Paul III Farnese, in the mid-16th century, the castle became the richest papal residence; from the 17th century onwards, it was mainly a prison, where Giordano Bruno, Benvenuto Cellini and Cagliostro were held. In 1925 it became a museum.

The official ticket or GetYourGuide

The museum ticket costs €18 and can be bought on the Musei Italiani platform, with CoopCulture or at the ticket office. On GetYourGuide you reserve the same entry together with something extra: a digital audio guide on your phone, a live guide or the Passetto di Borgo. Options with free cancellation can be cancelled up to 24 hours before; each listing states which are non-refundable. All fares in the guide to tickets.

The thing to know: the ticket is named. Write the exact names of all participants when you book and bring an original ID: they check them at the entrance.

The Passetto di Borgo

From the castle, a fortified corridor of about 800 metres starts, along the top of the walls, towards the Vatican Palaces. Alexander VI passed through it in 1494, Clement VII in 1527, during the Sack of Rome. Today it can only be walked with a guide, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and on Saturday evenings. The Passetto with a guide and the castle can also be booked on GetYourGuide.

When to go

The castle opens at 9:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, and last entry is at 18:30. The first Sunday of the month is free and busier, with a single queue. On the first Monday of the month, usually a closing day, there is Lunedì di Castello, from 14:00 to 20:00. All in the opening hours guide.

FAQ

Questions before entering

Direct answers to the most frequent questions about Castel Sant'Angelo.

How much does it cost to enter Castel Sant'Angelo?

The full ticket costs 18 euros from 1 July 2026. EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay 2 euros, under 18s enter free. The ticket is named: bring an ID. On GetYourGuide, the ticket with audio guide starts from $20. All fares in the ticket guide.

Can you enter Castel Sant'Angelo for free?

Yes, the first Sunday of the month: free entry from 9:00, last entry at 18:30, no booking required and a single queue. The next ones are Sunday 1 November and Sunday 6 December 2026. On that day, the Passetto di Borgo is not open for visits. Also free every day for those under 18.

Is it worth buying tickets in advance?

Booking is not mandatory, but the museum recommends it every day, especially on weekends and holidays. Tickets can also be bought at the castle’s ticket office. For the Passetto di Borgo, however, booking is always required because it can only be visited with a guide, and tickets are released month by month.

How much time do you need to visit Castel Sant'Angelo?

From one and a half to two hours for the castle, from Hadrian’s ramp to the terrace. With the Passetto di Borgo, add one hour. Guided tours on GetYourGuide last from 75 minutes to 2 hours.

What time does Castel Sant'Angelo close?

At 19:30, with last entry at 18:30. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00, all year with the same hours. It closes on Mondays, 25 December and 1 January. The first Sunday of the month opens free; the first Monday of the month has Lunedì di Castello. Details in the opening hours guide.

What is Lunedì di Castello?

An extraordinary opening on the first Monday of the month, from 14:00 to 20:00 with last entry at 19:00, with a special ticket of 5 euros sold only on site, no groups. The route is limited: the mausoleum ramp, the papal apartments and the terrace. The last 2026 dates are 2 November and 7 December.

What is inside Castel Sant'Angelo?

Three castles in one: the tomb of Hadrian with the spiral ramp and the Sala delle Urne, the fortress with the bastions, the prisons and the Cortile dell'Angelo, and the papal apartments with the Sala Paolina. At the top is the terrace with a view of St Peter’s. The room-by-room route in the what to see guide.

What is the secret of Castel Sant'Angelo?

The Passetto di Borgo: a fortified corridor of about 800 metres along the walls leading from the castle to the Vatican Palaces. Popes used it to escape, Alexander VI in 1494 and Clement VII during the Sack of Rome in 1527. Today it is walked with a guide, from Friday to Sunday. All in the Passetto guide.

Did the popes live in Castel Sant'Angelo?

They used it as a residence and refuge. The peak of its splendour was under Paul III Farnese (1534-1549), who had the apartments decorated. In times of danger, popes reached it from the Vatican via the Passetto.

Who is the angel on top of Castel Sant'Angelo?

It is the Archangel Michael. According to legend, in 590 Pope Gregory the Great saw him on the mole as he sheathed his sword, a sign that the plague was over. Today’s bronze statue is by Peter Anton von Verschaffelt, from 1753; the marble angel by Raffaello da Montelupo (1536) is in the Cortile dell'Angelo.

Is Castel Sant'Angelo part of the Vatican?

No. It has been the property of the Italian State since 1870 and is a national museum of the Italian Ministry of Culture. The ticket has nothing to do with the Vatican Museums. However, the Passetto di Borgo connects the castle to the Vatican Palaces.

Which metro station is closest to Castel Sant'Angelo?

Lepanto, on line A, about 15 minutes on foot. From Termini station there is also bus 40. From the historic centre you can walk there by crossing Ponte Sant'Angelo. All in the how to get there guide.
