The guided tours

With a guide, Castel Sant'Angelo really makes sense: Hadrian's tomb, the fortress and the papal rooms become one story. Here you will find the guided tours compared, how long they last, where they start and what extra you see.

You can also visit the castle on your own, with a ticket and an audio guide. But it is a building that changes function on every floor, and without someone to tell the story, you go up the ramp and exit onto the terrace without understanding what you have walked through. A guide makes the difference.

The options look similar on paper and differ in the details: duration, number of people, meeting point, areas visited. Below we list them, with the actual times and a tip for every type of traveller.

The short answer

A guided tour of Castel Sant'Angelo lasts from 75 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the tour. On GetYourGuide, prices start from $55 for the 2-hour tour with the highest rating and from $65 for the one that, according to the listing, enters areas usually closed to the public; all include the ticket and have free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The museum also organises free tours in Italian, «Castello racconta Castello», with the entrance ticket.

What guided tours are there at Castel Sant'Angelo?

On GetYourGuide there are four tours with a live guide, from 75 minutes to 2 hours, plus a ticket with the option of a guide in English or Spanish. The museum offers free tours in Italian, «Castello racconta Castello».

The four tours include the entrance ticket and headsets. They differ in duration, group size and meeting point. The reserved ticket is a separate case: you buy it as a ticket and choose between an audio guide and a live guide, in English or Spanish.

All five have free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The tours with the Passetto di Borgo are another category, described in the guide to the Passetto.

How long does a guided tour of Castel Sant'Angelo last?

From 75 minutes to 2 hours. Without a guide, the visit takes from one and a half to two hours.

The shortest is the shared or private tour: 15 minutes on Ponte Sant'Angelo and one hour inside the castle, according to the itinerary in the listing. The others last two hours, except the tour with a guide, indicated as 1 to 2 hours. According to the reviews, after the tour there is often free time to return to the rooms or stop on the terrace.

How long do you stay in total? Those who visit at a leisurely pace, according to the reviews, spend at least two hours at the castle. If you add the Passetto di Borgo, allow an extra hour.

«Agnes was very knowledgeable! She made everything very interesting! One hour of tour, the perfect duration. At the end she gave us some free time. I recommend her!»

Is a guided tour or an audio guide better?

The guide, if you want to understand what you see and ask questions. The audio guide, if you want to go at your own pace and spend less.

The ticket with digital audio guide, from $20, is the most reviewed option for the castle on GetYourGuide, with 9,148 reviews and a rating of 4.6. The audio guide is an app in 8 languages on your phone: bring headphones and a charged battery. According to reviews, the track numbering does not always follow the current route, which changed with the renovation works; if you choose it, look for the stops in the list instead of following the numbers.

The guide changes the type of visit. It takes you into the history, answers questions and, according to the listing of one of the tours, enters spaces that you do not see with a simple ticket. For a first trip to Rome, or with curious children, we would choose the guide.

What extra do you see with the tour in areas closed to the public?

According to the listing, the guided tour from $65 enters areas usually closed to the public: the Olearie, the historic prisons and Clemente VII's theatre, in addition to the route from the tomb to the terrace.

Castel Sant'Angelo with a guide is the guided tour with the most reviews, 1,885, and a rating of 4.7. It starts in front of the main entrance, on Lungotevere Castello, where the representative holds the «Loving Rome» flag. The tour tells the story of the castle as a tomb, papal residence, state treasury, prison, and execution site, and ends on the terrace.

Two rules from the listing to know in advance. The names of the participants must be entered as they appear on the passport or ID card, which must be brought on the day of the visit, and anyone who arrives late will not be admitted or refunded. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users, and there are stairs to the terrace.

What is the 2-hour guided tour with the highest rating like?

This is the $55 tour, rated 4.8 from 154 reviews: two hours with a guide, reserved entry and headsets, with two meeting points depending on the option.

The 2-hour guided tour follows the classic thread: Hadrian's tomb, the legend of Archangel Michael and the plague of 590, the frescoes and the papal apartments, the fortress corridors. The listing also mentions the angel statues by Bernini, Raggi, and Morelli. Entry is reserved: security checks at the entrance remain, but the ticket is already ready.

The rules are strict. You need the full name and date of birth of every participant, and a valid ID. Anyone arriving after the start time is not admitted and the ticket is not refunded. Strollers, suitcases and large bags are not allowed, and the tour is not recommended for people with mobility issues.

★★★★★

★★★★★

Is a small group or a private tour better?

The small-group tour, from $72, for a full two hours with the ticket included. The shared or private tour, from $100, if you want the shorter option, with the possibility of having the guide just for your group.

The small-group guided tour by City Walkers lasts two hours and takes place in any weather. The guide waits in front of the entrance with the City Walkers sign. You climb the spiral ramp through the castle's five floors, pass through the ash chamber and the cells, and reach the papal apartments, frescoes, and the arms collection before the terrace.

The shared or private tour by Touriks starts in front of the bridge-side entrance, with staff holding a yellow sign. It begins with 15 minutes on Ponte Sant'Angelo and its statues, then one hour in the castle, including the Gran Loggia of Paul III and the terrace. The voucher is not the ticket: the guide gives it to you at the meeting point. According to the listing, the tour is partially wheelchair accessible and the Passetto di Borgo is not included.

Are there free guided tours at Castel Sant'Angelo?

Yes, «Castello racconta Castello»: free Italian-language tours run by museum staff, about 1.5 hours long, for a maximum of 10 people. You need an entry ticket and you book with CoopCulture.

This is the museum’s offer for Italian speakers. The tour is free, the castle ticket is not, and places are limited: ten per slot. In August the programme is suspended. If you speak Italian and find an available date, take it.

For organised groups the rules are different. Groups of 10 to 25 people must book, enter between 9:00 and 17:30, at most one every 15 minutes, and pay €2 per person for the mandatory radio guide; school classes are exempt.

What to bring and what to know before a guided tour?

An original ID, comfortable shoes and no luggage: the ticket is named and the castle has no cloakroom.

The name on the ticket must match the ID, otherwise you will not be admitted. For this reason every listing asks for the exact names at the time of booking: check them before confirming. Arrive at the meeting point a few minutes early, because tours start at the scheduled time and anyone late loses their place.

Otherwise, travel light. The listings exclude suitcases and large bags, as well as strollers, and animals are not allowed. The guide provides the headsets. There are stairs and climbs, so anyone with mobility issues should read the tour listing carefully.
