St Peter's, the dome and the papal tombs

A guided tour of St Peter's Basilica, from Michelangelo's Pietà to Bernini's baldachin, down to the Vatican Grottoes with St Peter's tomb. It is the natural complement to Castel Sant'Angelo: the basilica is a short walk away, and both visits fit well in the same day.

St Peter's, the dome and the papal tombs

The experience

The meeting point is at the operator's office in Via del Mascherino 88, near Via di Porta Angelica and the basilica. From Castel Sant'Angelo you can walk there in a short time, which is why we include it here. Inside the basilica the guide takes you to the Pietà by Michelangelo, near the entrance, to the Bernini baldachin above the papal altar, which marks St Peter's tomb below, and to the Bronze Chair of St Peter in the apse. Then you go down into the Vatican Grottoes, the papal crypt with St Peter's tomb.

The dome, designed by Michelangelo and completed after his death, is an option: the ticket is only included if you choose the version with the dome. The listing is honest about one point: only 200 people go up per hour, so at the end of the tour the wait can range from 10 to 120 minutes. There is also an option with a guided tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, with reserved entry.

The price starts from $22 per person (GetYourGuide, October 2026), with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The tour lasts from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the option. Everyone goes through an airport-style security check, and that queue cannot be skipped: according to reviews, in peak season you may have to wait more than an hour in the sun. In the basilica no flash photography, no food and no drinks. The listing advises against it for anyone with mobility issues and for wheelchair users.

Our guide Valentina was very knowledgeable and took good care of us during the tour. Despite the crowds, we got in fairly quickly, and her explanations about what, how, and where were crystal clear. Excellent guide and excellent experience. I would definitely recommend it.

Tips before booking

  • Want the dome? Book the option with the dome: the ticket is only included there, and it adds up to two extra hours at the end.
  • Do the castle in the morning and St Peter's afterwards, or the other way around: the two visits are a short walk apart. One possible route is in the itinerary between the castle and Borgo.
  • Remember that Castel Sant'Angelo is closed on Mondays: to do both visits on the same day, choose between Tuesday and Sunday.
  • Leave flash and snacks at home: they are not allowed in the basilica. You’ll need water earlier, in the security line.
  • To move between the castle, St Peter's and the Vatican, read how to get to the castle and the Vatican.
