Castel Sant'Angelo is a state museum: the Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo, which reports to the Italian Ministry of Culture through the Direzione Musei nazionali della città di Roma. The price is set by the Ministry, and it changed in mid-2026: from 1 July the full ticket went from €16 to €18. If you still find €16 on some page, it is a text written earlier.

The discounts remain generous. Under-18s enter free, EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay €2, and entry is free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month. Below you will find every fare, what you need at the entrance, and when it is worth booking.

The short answer

The full ticket costs €18 from 1 July 2026; the reduced ticket costs €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25; under-18s enter free. On the first Sunday of the month, entry is free for everyone, with no reservation required. The ticket is named, so bring an ID, and it also covers two house museums in Rome on the same day and the next two days.

How much does it cost to enter Castel Sant'Angelo in 2026?

The full ticket costs €18 from 1 July 2026, the reduced ticket €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25. Under-18s enter free.

These are the fares published by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the museum's website. Until 30 June 2026, the full ticket cost €16; the new price applies on all ordinary opening days, from Tuesday to Sunday. The figures of €14 or €7 circulating on some blogs are incorrect.

There are also two special prices. Lunedì di Castello, the first Monday of the month, costs €5 and can only be bought on site, with a reduced route covering the Mausoleum ramp, the papal apartments and the terrace. Organised groups add €2 per person for the radio guide, which is compulsory for all groups except school classes. The Passetto di Borgo has its own rates, which you will find in the guide to the Passetto.

Who enters Castel Sant'Angelo for free?

Under-18s every day, and the categories provided for by law for state museums. On the first Sunday of the month, everyone enters free.

Free entry for minors has applied since 1 June 2025. The other categories are those of the national concessions of the Italian Ministry of Culture, which the museum refers to on its website: for each, proof is required, to be shown at the ticket office. Without a document, the free entry does not apply.

On the first Sunday of the month entry is free for everyone, from 9:00 with last entry at 18:30, as part of the #domenicalmuseo initiative. It cannot be booked online: the free ticket is collected at the ticket office and there is only one queue. The next dates are Sunday 1 November and Sunday 6 December 2026. In 2026, 25 April and 2 June were also free.

Two warnings. On that day, the Passetto di Borgo is not open, and with many people the museum may change the route. If the free Sunday is your chance, enter at 9:00, not at midday.

What does the Castel Sant'Angelo ticket include?

Entry to the museum, with the route from Hadrian's tomb to the terrace, and entry to two house museums in Rome, on the same day and the next two days. The Passetto di Borgo is not included.

With the ordinary ticket you visit the museum route: the ramp of the Roman tomb, the Cortile dell'Angelo, the papal apartments and the terrace. The room-by-room route is in the guide to what to see inside. Allow from one and a half to two hours.

Few people know: the same ticket also opens Casa Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi, together with Casa Museo Hendrik Christian Andersen, on the day of the visit and for the two following days. Keep the ticket after you leave.

The Passetto di Borgo, the covered passage on the walls towards the Vatican, remains excluded: it can only be visited with a guided tour and a separate fee, from Friday to Sunday. The castle has no cloakroom and animals are not allowed.

The ticket with the audio guide on your phone, in 8 languages, to follow the route at your own pace from Adriano's ramp to the terrace. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

The ticket is named: what do you need at the entrance?

Yes, the ticket is in the visitor's name. Present the ticket and an original ID document: if the details do not match, entry will be denied without a refund.

This is the rule that surprises most. At the entrance, staff compare the name on the ticket with the document, so anyone buying for others must enter the exact names of each participant. The listings on GetYourGuide ask for the same: first and last name as on the passport or ID card, and for some tours also the date of birth.

If you entered a name incorrectly, there is a solution. For tickets bought online or at the call centre, a change of name is allowed until midnight the day before the visit. On the day itself, no changes are possible.

Travel light. The castle has no cloakroom, animals are not allowed, and several GetYourGuide listings exclude suitcases, large bags and strollers. Leave everything you do not need at the hotel.

Is it worth buying the Castel Sant'Angelo ticket in advance?

Yes, especially on weekends and public holidays. Booking is not mandatory, but the museum recommends it every day.

The museum states it clearly: booking is optional and recommended. The official channels are the Musei Italiani platform, with its website and app, and CoopCulture, online or at the call centre (+39 06 399 671 00, Monday to Friday 9:00-18:00, Saturday 9:00-14:00). With your ticket already bought, you have one less thing to do on arrival.

There is also a practical reason. During the renovation of the reception areas, the ticket office is in temporary structures outside the castle, for about seven months according to the museum. For groups of 10 to 25 people, booking is mandatory: entries are from 9:00 to 17:30, with a maximum of one group every 15 minutes. Schools book and bring the stamped and signed list of students.

On GetYourGuide, the ticket with digital audio guide starts from $20 and has 9,148 reviews, with a rating of 4.6. The staff assist you with the ticket about 50 metres from the main entrance; the listing asks you to arrive 15 minutes before the chosen time, with headphones, a charged phone and ID.

Can you buy the ticket at the castle's ticket office?

Yes, the ticket office sells tickets on every opening day. On free days and on Lunedì di Castello it is the only channel.

Those who arrive without a reservation buy at the ticket office, at the official price of €18. On a weekday this is the simplest way. On weekends and public holidays the museum recommends booking.

In two cases, the ticket office is mandatory. On the first Sunday of the month, the free ticket is only available there, with no online booking. For Lunedì di Castello, with the €5 ticket, you can only buy it on site and it does not allow groups. The dates for both are in the guide to opening hours.

Is it hard to find tickets for Castel Sant'Angelo?

For the castle, no: there is a ticket office and online booking is optional. The Passetto di Borgo is more difficult, as it can only be visited with a guided tour on fixed days.

For the castle, the point is not to find a ticket, it is to choose the time. With online purchase you fix the date, arrive with the ticket in hand and go straight to the checks.

The Passetto is another matter. It can only be visited on guided tours, on fixed days and time slots: mornings from Friday to Sunday, Saturday evening, and the second and fourth Sunday with the accessible route. It is never visited on the first Sunday of the month. If it is in your plans, book it first and organise the rest around it.

On GetYourGuide you will find two options with the Passetto: Passetto di Borgo with a guide and the castle, from $38, or Passetto with reserved entry, from $55. Both are non-refundable: book them when the date is certain.

One hour with the guide on the Passetto di Borgo and the Bastione di San Marco, then the castle with the audio guide on the app. Non-refundable.

What does a GetYourGuide ticket add to the official ticket?

An audio guide, a live guide, assisted pickup or a second museum in the same booking. Entry to the castle remains that of the museum, included in the price.

The official ticket is entry to the museum. The options on GetYourGuide include this and add a service. The reserved ticket, from $36, lets you choose between an audio guide on your smartphone and a live guide in English or Spanish, and arrives via WhatsApp or email 24 hours before. The ticket with terrace and audio guide, from $21, is collected from the staff at the meeting point.

A tip about the audio guide: according to reviews, the track numbering does not always follow the current route, which has changed with the renovation works. The Dromos, from which you can now enter due to the works, was once track 19. Choose the tracks from the list instead of following the numbers and everything will go smoothly.
